Donation link: Capilano Elementary iPad Fundraiser Fundraising for: 60 new iPads (Durable case and 3-year warranty included for each iPad) Cost: $36,000 (100% of the proceeds goes to this fundraiser) Why is this important:
Listed as the highest priority item by teachers and staff to support the school.
Current iPads have either reached or are approaching their end of life.
iPads are important tools for teachers and educators to deliver instruction to all children as they provide an alternative way for learners to access learning (i.e. small break-out group, individual practice of targeted programs, personal inquiry project, etc.)
English language learners are able to utilize text to speech apps, a vital tool for their learning.
iPads are critical communication tools for diverse learners with complex educational needs.
Hey Siri? Is it going to rain today? How bad is the traffic on Lions Gate Bridge? How do you say, "Make mine a double!" in Spanish? With two simple words, a push of a button or the swipe of a finger, we have the world and all its collective information at our disposal. For the vast majority of us who had an etch-a-sketch as our first-generation iPad, this is exhilarating! We can figure out how to change a tire, where to holiday and what that ex who dumped us in high school looks like today. Not that any of us would know from personal experience.
While we were already reliant on our smart devices prior to COVID, the pandemic has increased this. Remember all those Zoom Meetings you attended? Or the countless videos you watched on how to master, but never really did, the art of cutting your bangs? With increased use comes hastened equipment wear and tear and this is true of many of the current iPads at school. They have either reached, or are fast approaching, their end of life. As such, when the PAC approached the school administration for the best way to support the school, iPads came back as the highest priority item with the largest impact.
But why does your child need access to an iPad while at school? Well, unless you like to live life dangerously and do all your professional and personal work with a pen or not look up anything (ever), technology and smart devices have become an integral part of our lives and the same goes for our children. When used correctly under guidance, smart devices can be integral supports to teaching and learning as we develop educated citizens in the 21st century. Their portability, ease of interaction, especially for smaller, less practiced hands, and versatility of available applications makes them important tools for teachers and other educators to deliver instruction to our children. For our several English language learners, there are text to speech apps available on iPads that are vital tools in meeting the needs of these learners. Furthermore, for learners with complex education needs, iPads are critical tools for communication with others. So rest assured, they are neither looking up Kim Kardashian’s waist to hip ratio at school nor will they be taking the iPads into the washroom to reappear 30 minutes later like your partner does. All iPads will be monitored and used for educational purposes only.
So what's the bottom line? We need 60 new iPads. 20 will be used for the upstairs technology cart, 20 for the downstairs technology cart, and 20 are classroom specific, meaning each classroom will receive 1 dedicated iPad.
How much is this going to cost? $36,000. Yes, that's a massive amount of money but thankfully with the generous donation of $10,000 from one family at the school, we now need to raise $26,000. While that’s still a large amount of money, when we break it down per student (yes, EVERY student at school has access to and uses an iPad), that's $65 per child. 100% of the proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards the purchase of the iPads and this cost includes a durable case and 3-year warranty for each iPad.
You have the option of donating $65, $130, the full cost of an iPad ($600) OR any other amount within your means. Big or small, we’ll happily (and thankfully) take it! The fundraiser is not restricted to members of the Capilano Elementary community and we also ask that you please share the link with all friends, relatives and co-workers who can donate.
